Lisa of Blackpink has released her comeback solo track, “Rockstar.” This marks her first solo work after leaving the YG imprint.

"Rockstar" is produced by San Homaee and OneRepublic’s Ryan Tedder. It is Lisa’s first solo single released under the new partnership of her LLOUD Co. management company and RCA Records. A solo album has yet to be announced.

Let's get into the Henry Scholfield-directed visuals below.

A very well-produced and directed music video. The cinematography is top-tier. The VFX moments were well placed, and I loved the characteristic attention to detail on every frame. One of the best music videos I've seen this year.

I love how Lisa shows off her Thai roots by incorporating the streets of Bangkok as the backdrop. You can see a couple of sub-cultures represented in the music video, including three very gorgeous and well-known Ladyboys. Shout out to Bruze, Chinni, and Aeffy. I see it was important for Lisa to include Thai's LGBT+ community. Thailand recently became the third Asian jurisdiction after Nepal and Taiwan to legalise gay marriage.

The choreography overall was quite underwhelming, especially considering the surrounding greatness. However, Lisa looked absolutely stunning, and I appreciate how her stylist managed to honour Lisa's well-known Aaliyah-esque aesthetic while still bringing a fresh and new look.

While watching, a few things came to mind:

  • Some choreography moments reminded me of Parris Goebel. Or is it just me?

  • I noticed that Lisa says "Every city that I go is my city," which is very similar to a tagline used by CL, "Seoul city my city." Is this a nod or shade towards her former YG cohort?

  • Lisa reportedly paid 20,000 THB to each Yaowarat Road shop owner for the ROCKSTAR music video shoot. And we didn't hear a peep about it. Now that's loyalty.

What are your thoughts on Lisa's new music and visuals? Let's discuss this in the comments.
